It is a simple recipe cooked with dry roasted semolina (rava) in water,

and tampered with spices & herbs.

To enhance the taste of rava upma, add peanuts, cashews, onions, ginger, mixed vegetables, ghee etc.

Upma is most seen breakfast in south indian homes, tiffin centers and weddings.

Is upma Healthy?

Rava or semolina is made from refined whole wheat grain. Eating upma often is not healthy as its made from refined food.

The rich fiber skin is removed while processing or milling, and the nutrient rich germ is also removed from the outer skin.

How to make Rava upma/Upma recipe

Ingredients to make upma

  • Semolina – 1 cup
  • Chopped Onions – 1 small
  • Green chillies – 2 to 3 Slit
  • Ginger garlic paste – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Salt as necessary
  • Ghee – 2 Teaspoons (optional)
  • Lemon Juice (optional)

Ingredients for Tempering upma

  • Oil or ghee – 2 tablespoons
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
  • Peanuts – 2 tablespoons
  • Cashews – 8 nos
  • Urad dal – 1 teaspoon
  • Channa dal – 1 teaspoon
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig

How to make Rava upma/Upma recipe

Preparation:

  • First on a medium flame dry roast the rava or semolina until crunchy.
  • Once done transfer it to a bowl and start chopping onions, green chillies and ginger.
  • Do not roast the rava till brown as it changes its flavour of upma.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of oil to a hot pan and add mustard and cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  • Now add urad dal, channa dal, peanuts and cashews, and saute on a medium flame.
  • Once done add green chillies, ginger-garlic paste, and curry leaves.
  • now add chopped onions and saute them till transparent.
  • Adding the proper water proportion to upma is necessary.
  • add salt as necessary and 2 & half cups of water.
  • Once the water begins to boil adjust it to a medium flame.
  • Add the roasted rava in slowly and constantly stir it so that upma won’t end up lumpy.
  • keep stirring the upma and check for lumps, and break if any.
  • Cover it with a lid and cook for 5 mins.
  • once done add freshly chopped coriander leaves and switch the flame off.
  • Keep it covered for about 5 mins to let it set.
  • Serve it Hot with Chutney, pickle, sambar.
  • And also you can add your favourite toppings like lime juice or ghee.
  • Even Yoghurt and upma is also a great combination give it a try.
